Best Woollen Wash Liquid for Sweaters in India (2026)

By Ananya Iyer 25 September 2026

Every November someone in the family pulls out a favourite sweater that went into the machine last winter and came back a size smaller and stiff as cardboard. That is felting: wool fibres have tiny scales that lock together with heat, agitation and harsh detergent. A proper woollen wash liquid, cool water and a gentle cycle prevent it almost entirely.

For this guide we went through about 210 detergent listings on Amazon.in, kept the ones sold specifically for woollens and delicates that were in stock on 25 September 2026, and read their review summaries and owner reviews. The list is short because most 'gentle' detergents are general-purpose liquids with a softer marketing message.

We have added one non-detergent pick, a set of mesh laundry bags, because it makes more difference to machine-washed sweaters than the choice between two good wool washes.

Top picks at a glance

The honest take

Use Godrej Ezee for most woollens: it is made for them and it is approved by Woolmark according to its listing. The detergent matters less than how you wash: cool water, the wool or hand-wash cycle, a low spin, a mesh bag, and drying flat in the shade. Get those right and a sweater lasts years; get them wrong and no detergent will save it.

How to choose

Why regular detergent damages wool

Wool is a protein fibre, like hair. Many everyday detergents are alkaline and contain enzymes designed to break down protein stains, and both can weaken wool over time. Wool washes such as Ezee, Safewash and Presto! describe themselves as pH-neutral or pH-balanced with no soda, which is what you want.

Is your sweater actually wool?

Check the label. Many affordable sweaters in India are acrylic or acrylic blends, which do not felt but do pill. A wool wash is still gentle on them, and a normal liquid detergent on a gentle cycle is fine too. Pure wool, merino, cashmere and pashmina need a proper wool wash and the most care.

Look for Woolmark approval if you own good woollens

Woolmark approval means a detergent has been assessed for washing wool. Of our picks, only Ezee's listing states it. For expensive merino or cashmere, that is worth choosing.

Liquid, not powder

Powders can leave grains trapped in thick knits in cool water. All the washes here are liquids that dissolve fully at the low temperatures woollens need.

Godrej Ezee Liquid Detergent for Winter Wear (1 kg)

The verdict

Still the default choice for sweaters, mufflers and shawls, and for good reason.

Ezee has been the name Indian families associate with woollens for decades; one owner says they have been using it since 1975. The listing describes a pH-neutral, no-soda formula that prevents shrinking and fading, added fabric conditioner for softness, and approval by Woolmark Apparel Care for washing woollen apparel. It works for hand wash and for both top-load and front-load machines. The 1 kg bottle has a 4.5-star average from more than 3,800 ratings and more than 1,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it excellent for woollen clothes, removing dirt without damaging fabric and leaving it soft, with a pleasant scent and good value. One owner says it makes the winter laundry routine a breeze; the larger Ezee pouch's reviewers call it the gold standard for woollens and delicates in India.

Some buyers report leaking bottles. Ezee's popular 2 kg pouch was listed as currently unavailable when we checked, so the 1 kg bottle is the best-value size in stock.

For a first try or a small wardrobe, the 500 g bottle is also in stock and equally well rated.

Safewash Premium Liquid Detergent for Woollens and Delicates (2 × 1 L)

The verdict

The pick if you wash silks, chiffons and baby clothes as well as woollens.

Safewash, from Wipro, is the other long-standing Indian name in gentle detergents. This version is sold for woollens and delicates: the listing describes a pH-neutral formula free from soda and bleach, active fabric conditioners, neem for germ protection, and use on sweaters, jackets, shawls, silks, chiffons, baby clothes and lingerie. It has a 4.4-star average from more than 2,100 ratings and more than 3,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective as a stain remover and like its fragrance and value. One owner who uses it for winter and office wear says it dissolves quickly, leaves no white residue, keeps clothes soft and can be applied directly to stains before washing.

It has fewer ratings than Ezee, and one buyer wants better packaging. It does not mention Woolmark approval on the listing.

Presto! Wool Wash (5 litres)

The verdict

The cheapest way to wash a family's worth of winter wear all season.

Presto! is Amazon's own brand, and its wool wash comes in a 5 litre pack that will last a large family through winter. The listing describes a mild, pH-balanced, no-soda formula for sweaters, scarves, blankets and socks that preserves softness and shape, for both machine and hand wash. It has a 4.4-star average from more than 6,200 ratings.

Amazon's review summary says customers love the fragrance, value it as a money saver, and find it performs well, with one comparing it to Ezee and saying it leaves no residue, and others praising how soft it leaves clothes. Owners of the 2 litre version say it is cheaper than Ezee and works as well on woollens.

It does not claim Woolmark approval, and 5 litres is a lot for a small household. For a couple of sweaters and a shawl, Ezee's 500 g bottle makes more sense.

HOKIPO Mesh Laundry Bags (pack of 3)

The verdict

The cheapest insurance for machine-washed sweaters.

A mesh bag stops a sweater from being stretched, twisted and rubbed against other clothes and the drum, which is where most pilling and misshaping starts. HOKIPO's set includes three polyester mesh bags with zips, sized 60 × 60 cm, 50 × 60 cm and 40 × 50 cm according to the listing, for front-load, top-load and semi-automatic machines. It has a 4.3-star average from nearly 5,000 ratings and more than 800 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find the bags good quality and value, and particularly effective for delicate clothes and innerwear. One owner says they are still as good as new after more than a year and protect stretchy items; another notes the zip puller tucks into an elastic groove so it does not catch in the machine.

Some customers report bags tearing within days and zips failing within two months, so the durability is inconsistent. Put one sweater per bag for the best protection.

How to wash sweaters in a washing machine

  1. Check the care label. 'Dry clean only' or 'hand wash only' means exactly that for good wool.

  2. Turn the sweater inside out and put it in a mesh laundry bag, one sweater per bag.

  3. Choose the Wool, Hand Wash or Delicate programme at 30°C or cold.

  4. Use the dose of wool wash on the pack; do not add bleach, stain removers or extra softener.

  5. Set the spin to 400 to 600 rpm, or the lowest your machine offers.

  6. Take the sweater out as soon as the cycle ends so it does not sit crumpled and damp.

How to hand-wash woollens and shawls

  1. Fill a bucket with cool or lukewarm water and dissolve the wool wash first.

  2. Submerge the garment and press it gently for a minute or two. Do not rub or scrub.

  3. Let it soak for about ten minutes, no longer.

  4. Rinse in water of the same temperature; sudden hot-to-cold changes encourage felting.

  5. Press the water out gently. Never wring or twist.

  6. Roll the garment in a dry towel and press to absorb more water.

How to dry woollens without stretching

Lay sweaters flat on a towel or a drying rack, reshape them to their original size, and dry them in the shade. Hanging a wet sweater stretches the shoulders and length, and strong sunlight can fade colours and harden wool. Never put woollens in a tumble dryer unless the label specifically allows it.

Mistakes to avoid

Washing too often

Wool naturally resists odours. Air sweaters for a day between wears and wash them every few wears, not after each one.

Using hot water

Heat plus agitation is what shrinks wool. Keep to cold or 30°C.

Using stain removers or bleach

Many stain removers are not meant for wool; Vanish's liquid listing, for example, says not to use it on wool or silk. For spills, dab with cool water and a drop of wool wash. Our stain remover guide covers what is safe on which fabric.

Storing sweaters dirty

Moths are attracted to body oils and food traces. Wash woollens before putting them away for summer, and store them clean, dry and folded.

Pulling at pills

Pills on sweaters are best removed with a fabric shaver, not by hand. See our guide to lint removers.

Popular detergents we left out, and why

These appear in Amazon.in results for woollen and delicate detergents. Each was left out for a specific reason from its listing or review summary on 25 September 2026.

Product

Why it is not on the list

Godrej Ezee 2 kg pouch

The best-value Ezee size, but listed as currently unavailable on the day we checked.

Genteel Matic Liquid Detergent (front load)

A gentle, no-soda detergent, but it showed as unavailable when we checked, and one owner says they received the top-load version instead of front load.

Safewash Gentle Premium Liquid Detergent

A good everyday gentle detergent, but sold for general laundry rather than woollens, and its review summary mentions watery consistency and broken seals.

Regular 'matic' liquids (Surf Excel, Ariel, Tide)

Excellent for everyday laundry, but not made or marketed for wool.

How we picked: We read about 210 Amazon.in detergent listings, kept those sold specifically for woollens and delicates that were in stock on 25 September 2026 with enough ratings to judge, and read each one's review summary and recent owner reviews. We did not test these products ourselves; the picks reflect listing details and what verified buyers report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best detergent for woollen clothes in India?

Godrej Ezee is the most trusted: its listing describes a pH-neutral, no-soda formula with added conditioner, approved by Woolmark Apparel Care, and it has a 4.5-star rating.

Can I wash sweaters in a washing machine?

Yes, if the care label allows it. Turn them inside out, use a mesh bag, choose the wool or hand-wash cycle at 30°C or cold with a low spin, and use a wool wash.

Why did my sweater shrink in the wash?

Wool felts and shrinks with heat, agitation and sudden temperature changes. Hot water, a normal cycle and a high spin are the usual culprits.

Do I need fabric softener with Ezee?

No. Ezee's listing says it has added fabric conditioner, so a separate softener is not needed.

How do I dry woollen clothes?

Roll them in a towel to remove water, then lay them flat and reshape them to dry in the shade. Do not hang wet sweaters or dry them in strong sunlight.

Can I wash a pashmina shawl at home?

Many can be hand-washed gently in cool water with a small amount of wool wash, but check the label and follow any dry-clean-only instruction for expensive pieces.

The verdict

Godrej Ezee remains the best woollen wash for most Indian homes: made for wool, with no soda, a built-in conditioner and Woolmark approval according to its listing. Choose Safewash if you also wash silks and baby clothes, and Presto! Wool Wash if you want a big, cheap pack for the whole family.

Whichever you buy, add a set of mesh laundry bags if you machine-wash, keep the water cool and the spin low, and dry sweaters flat in the shade.
