The stain on your white school shirt collar, the haldi on a kurta after lunch and the oil on your jeans are three different chemistry problems. Collar grime is body oil and dirt, turmeric is a natural dye that reacts to soap, and cooking oil needs a degreaser. That is why one bottle rarely fixes everything, and why the best stain remover for you depends on which stains you fight most.

For this guide we went through more than 300 stain remover and fabric whitener listings on Amazon.in, kept products that were in stock on 25 September 2026 with enough ratings to judge, and read the review summaries and owner reviews for what each one actually removes and what it fails on.

We ended up with seven products, each the best we found for a particular kind of stain. Most homes need one all-rounder and perhaps one specialist.

The honest take

Buy a jar of Vanish powder and learn to soak; it handles most stains in an Indian home. Add a specialist only for the stain you fight most: Robin for collars, Dr. Beckmann for oil, Ethiek for yellowed whites. And remember that speed matters more than product: a stain rinsed in cold water within an hour is half gone before any remover touches it.

How to choose

Match the remover to the stain

Oxygen boosters such as Vanish handle protein and organic stains well: tea, coffee, food, grass, sweat and blood. Oil and grease need a degreasing remover such as Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils. Collar grime responds best to a pre-wash made for it. Yellowing and haldi on white clothes respond to a whitener.

Oxygen bleach, not chlorine, for most clothes

Chlorine bleach is powerful but only safe on pure white cotton. It fades colours and weakens silk, wool and stretch fabrics. Vanish, Ethiek and the Tide pen are chlorine-free according to their listings, which is why the Vanish products can be used on coloured clothes.

Read the fabric restrictions

Vanish's liquid listing says not to use it on wool, silk or leather. Test any remover on a hidden seam first, especially on printed fabrics, block prints and handloom, where dyes can run. For sweaters and shawls, a dedicated wool wash is safer; see our guide to woollen wash liquids.

Powder or liquid

Powders are better for soaking a bucket of stained whites or uniforms. Liquids are easier to pour straight onto a spot. One long-time Vanish user actually finds the powder more convenient, made into a paste for hardened stains.

Vanish All in One Detergent Booster Powder (400 g)

The verdict

The one to keep in every Indian laundry: soaks out everyday stains on whites and colours alike.

Vanish All in One detergent booster powder stain remover 400 g jar

Vanish is an oxygen-based stain remover: instead of chlorine it releases oxygen in water to break stains down, which is why it can be used on coloured clothes as well as whites. The listing says it is safe on both, works in hand and machine washes, and can be added with your detergent or used directly. The powder has a 4.4-star average from more than 10,900 ratings and more than 6,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective at removing stains, particularly on white clothes, and that it makes clothes brighter and colours more vibrant. One owner who had given up on their shirt collars and cuffs says it lifted years of sweat, dirt and neel; another calls it the best remover for blood stains they have found in India, after soaking the fabric in Vanish for a few hours.

It is not cheap to use in every wash, and some customers feel it is not worth the cost. Use it as a soak or pre-treatment for stained items, not a scoop in every load.

Vanish All in One Liquid Detergent Booster (800 ml)

The verdict

Better than the powder for quick spot treatment before a machine wash.

Vanish All in One liquid detergent booster 800 ml bottle

The liquid version of Vanish is easier to apply straight onto a stain: pour, rub gently, wait, then wash. The listing says it is chlorine-free and suitable for whites and colours in hand and machine washes, and warns not to use it on wool, silk or leather. It has a 4.3-star average from more than 17,000 ratings and more than 10,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it extremely useful, but effectiveness and value get mixed reviews. One owner found it worked when applied directly to stains but not when simply added to the machine, which matches how we would use it: as a pre-treatment, not an additive. Some buyers say it does not remove children's colouring stains, and the summary reports doubts about authenticity.

Robin Cuffs'n Collars Liquid (200 ml, pack of 2)

The verdict

The simplest fix for the dark ring on shirt collars.

Robin Cuffs n Collars liquid 200 ml pack of two bottles

Robin Cuffs'n Collars has been around for decades, and it is still sold on Amazon.in in a pack of two 200 ml bottles. It is made for one job: the grey or brown line of sweat, skin oil and dirt that builds up inside collars and cuffs. It has a 4.4-star average from more than 640 ratings and sells more than 400 a month.

Owners are loyal. One says they have used it for more than a decade and that it is perfect for shirt collars and cuffs; another, who could no longer find it in local shops, says it cleans dirty collars within seconds when used as a pre-wash. The advice from long-time users is to apply it, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then wash as usual.

The listing gives almost no detail about ingredients or use, so follow the instructions on the bottle and test on a hidden seam of coloured shirts first.

Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Grease (50 ml)

The verdict

The specialist for oil stains that detergent and Vanish leave behind.

Dr Beckmann Stain Devils grease liquid stain remover 50 ml bottle

Dr. Beckmann's Stain Devils are a range of stain-specific removers, each made for one type of stain. This one targets grease and oil, the stains that oxygen boosters struggle with: pakoda oil on a kurta, ghee on a sari, bike grease on jeans. It has a 4.1-star average from more than 1,500 ratings.

Amazon's review summary reports positive feedback on its effectiveness, with one customer removing deeply ingrained truck grease from a carpet. One owner explains how to get the best from it: they soaked a shirt in warm to hot water with detergent for four hours, then applied a few drops and brushed out the stain, removing a six-month-old oil stain that a dry cleaner could not. Another removed oil from jeans in a minute but warns that it is very strong.

The bottle is small, the review summary mentions a foul chemical smell, and it does not work on paint. Use it in a ventilated room, and test it on a hidden seam.

Ethiek Fabric Whitener (400 g)

The verdict

The pick for white clothes that have gone yellow or picked up haldi and food stains.

Ethiek fabric whitener 400 g for white clothes chlorine bleach free

Ethiek's whitener is a chlorine-free detergent add-on for white clothes. The listing says it removes yellowing and tough stains including ink, haldi, grease and oil, works with any detergent in hand or machine washes, and can be rubbed directly onto a tough stain before washing. It has a 4.2-star average from more than 650 ratings and more than 1,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it more effective than regular detergent, that it removes tough stains and makes white clothes look new without damage, and that it is particularly useful for school children's uniforms. One owner says old stains became much lighter; another used it to rescue whites that had picked up colour from other clothes in the wash.

It is for white fabrics only, and it has a much smaller review base than Vanish, so we treat it as a specialist rather than an everyday product.

Sirona Period Stain Remover Wipes (pack of 10)

The verdict

A genuinely useful emergency fix for college, office and travel.

Sirona period stain remover wipes pack of ten for clothes

Sirona describes these as India's first period stain remover wipes. The listing says they combine surfactants with enzymes that break down blood stains, work in about 60 seconds without water, and also work on food, mud and ink stains. You tear one open, dab the stain and let it air-dry. They have a 4.3-star average from nearly 1,200 ratings.

Amazon's review summary says customers find them effective, compact and portable for travel, gentle on skin and fabric, and that they do not leave marks or odours. One owner says they removed fresh period stains effortlessly and worked on food stains too; another wipes away the lather with a tissue afterwards and found they even cleaned old marks on a wall.

They work best on fresh stains, and opinions on value are mixed: ten wipes do not go far if you use them often. Keep a few in your bag rather than using them for laundry at home.

Tide To Go Instant Stain Remover Pen (pack of 3)

The verdict

For people who spill chai on white shirts at work.

Tide To Go instant stain remover pen pack of three

Tide To Go is the pen you press onto a fresh spill so that it does not set before you get home. The listing describes a bleach-free, pocket-sized pen for food and drink stains. This pack of three is imported and carries a 4.7-star average from nearly 10,000 ratings, most of them international.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective and portable and consider it good value, with one noting that a pen lasts about five to ten uses. Owners describe removing tomato sauce from a white T-shirt immediately after a spill and keeping a pen in their bag at all times.

It is for fresh stains only; it will not shift old or oily marks. One owner found it less effective than they expected.

How to remove common Indian stains

Haldi (turmeric)

Turmeric is a natural dye that turns reddish when it meets soap, which is why a haldi stain often looks worse after the first wash. Scrape off any food, rinse from the back with cold water, treat whites with a whitener or oxygen booster, and then dry the stained area in direct sunlight. Sunlight fades turmeric remarkably well, often finishing the job the wash started.

Blood and period stains

Always use cold water. Hot water cooks the protein into the fabric. Rinse from the back, then soak in cold water with an oxygen booster. One Vanish owner says a few hours' soak removed blood stains that bleach and hydrogen peroxide could not.

Cooking oil and ghee

Blot, do not rub. Work a drop of dishwash liquid or a grease remover into the stain, leave it for 15 minutes, then wash in the warmest water the fabric allows. Check the stain before drying; heat from an iron or dryer sets oil permanently.

Tea and coffee

Rinse in cold water as soon as possible, then pre-treat with an oxygen booster before washing. Avoid rubbing bar soap into a fresh tea stain, because soap can set tannin stains.

Collar and cuff grime

Apply a collar pre-wash or a paste of oxygen booster, leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, scrub gently with a soft brush, then wash. Washing shirts after each wear stops the ring from building up.

Mehendi (henna)

Henna is a strong dye and one of the hardest stains to remove; one Vanish owner reports it removed everything except black henna. Treat it immediately with cold water and an oxygen booster, and accept that set henna may only fade.

Mistakes to avoid

Using hot water first

Hot water sets protein stains such as blood, egg and milk. Start cold, then warm up only for oil.

Rubbing hard

Rubbing pushes stains deeper and roughs up fibres. Blot and dab from the back of the fabric.

Ironing or tumble-drying a stained garment

Heat sets stains permanently. Check the stain has gone before drying or ironing.

Mixing products

Do not mix chlorine bleach with other cleaners, and rinse between different stain treatments.

Blaming the remover when the machine is the problem

Grey, dingy whites are often caused by hard-water scale and detergent residue in the machine rather than stains. Descaling every few months helps; our guide to washing machine descalers explains how.

These rank highly in Amazon.in results for stain removers. Each was left out for a specific reason from its listing or review summary on 25 September 2026.

How we researched this guide

These picks come from desk research, not hands-on testing. We compare published specifications against others in the same price band, read through verified buyer reviews for problems that repeat rather than one-off complaints, and check the current Amazon.in price to judge value. Products are scored on the same three factors every time — specifications (40%), buyer sentiment (40%) and value for money (20%).

We have not physically tested these products, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. Where a claim about safety, certification, battery behaviour or warranty appears in this guide, it comes from the manufacturer’s own documentation or the retailer’s listing — we do not verify manufacturer claims independently.
