Best Rangoli Colours for Diwali 2026: Kits, White Powder and Stencils That Work

The short answer

Prices and availability checked on Amazon.in · Last updated

The rangoli at the door is the first thing anyone sees at Diwali, and for many of us the first thing we ever made for the festival: a grid of dots from a grandmother's fingers, colours poured from paper cones, a younger cousin stepping in the middle of it. Today most rangoli colours are bought online in squeeze bottles and kits, and the reviews are honest about what goes wrong.

We went through the rangoli colours, white powders and stencils sold on Amazon.in, and the pattern is clear. No kit is perfect: almost every popular set sits around 4 stars, and the same complaints repeat, mainly bottle nozzles that clog, and powders that are duller or coarser than the photos. So this guide picks the best of each type, and spends as much time on how to get a clean, bright rangoli from them.

The honest take

Buy loose colour for the main design and a separate bag of white for the outline. Bottle kits are convenient for children and beginners, but their nozzles are the most common complaint. A paper cone or your fingers give more control.

Expect the colours to look a little less vivid than the listing photos. A white outline and a dark floor make any colour look brighter.

Which kind of rangoli colour should you buy?

Type

Good for

Watch out for

Squeeze-bottle kits

Beginners, children, thin lines

Nozzles clog or are too small; less colour per rupee

Loose powder packets

Free-hand and large designs

Messier; needs a cone, sieve or practised fingers

Glitter or "marble" powders

Bright, sparkling fills

Can look patchy if spread too thin

White powder

Outlines, dots, kolam

Coarse powder breaks lines; buy fine

MDF or reusable mats

Apartments, uneven floors, reuse

Smaller; not the traditional look

Myth vs fact

Myth: A bigger kit means more colour.
Fact: A 24-bottle kit can be two bottles of each of 12 colours, as one owner discovered. Check the number of shades, not just bottles.

Myth: Rangoli colours are safe to eat or play with.
Fact: They are dyed stone or marble powder, not food colours. Keep them away from toddlers' mouths and pets, and wash hands after.

Myth: Sprinkling water makes rangoli last longer.
Fact: It smudges powder rangoli and can stain light floors. Keep fans off and feet away instead.

Ascension's kit is the most-bought rangoli set in our search, and the one that gives a beginner everything at once: ten bottles of colour at 80 g each, four 4 × 4 inch stencils and two filler tools, according to the listing. The bottles are pencil-shaped for a comfortable grip.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it easy to use, like the colours and say the quantity is enough for home decoration, and like the stencils. The stencil size gets mixed comments, with some finding them small.

White is the colour you use most, for the outline, the dot grid and the borders that make other colours stand out. hamy's 1 kg pack is listed as first-quality marble white rangoli powder, eco-friendly and ceramic based.

There was no review summary for this listing when we checked, but owner reviews are consistent: one describes very good, free-flowing powder; another, on their fourth order, calls it the best white rangoli available online. A one-line review questions whether it is original, so check the pack when it arrives.

There was no review summary when we checked. Owners say the stencils make rangoli easy and the designs are good value; one did not like every design but had plenty to choose from. A three-star review found them flimsy and smaller than expected for the price.

For a big centrepiece, CraftVatika and Ascension sell 11 to 12 inch stencils, but their reviews are more mixed.

These are four 18-inch lotus-shaped MDF bases with raised outlines. You fill each section with colour, then place the finished piece at the door, on a table or around the mandir. The kit includes six colours and two diyas, according to the listing, and the cut-outs are reusable year after year.

How to make a neat rangoli, step by step

  1. Clean and dry the floor. Sweep, mop and let it dry fully. Dust and moisture make colour clump.
  2. Mark the design. Use chalk, or a dot grid in white powder, for the outline. Fix mistakes now; they are hard to fix in colour.
  3. Outline in white. Pinch the powder between thumb and forefinger and let it trickle as you move, or use a paper cone with a small opening.
  4. Fill from the centre outward, so you do not lean over finished parts.
  5. Add the details last: stencil motifs, glitter, and diyas around the edge. Water-sensor diyas are the safest choice near powder and saris.
  6. Protect it. Fans off nearby, and a couple of chairs or a dupatta rope to keep feet away.

Fixing clogged bottle nozzles

Most bottle kits ship with tiny holes. Make the hole slightly bigger with a needle or pin, testing on newspaper; make it too big and the colour pours without control, as one owner found. Tap the bottle gently as you squeeze, and keep the powder dry. If a colour is lumpy, pour it out, crush it with a spoon and sieve it back in.

Cleaning up after Diwali

Sweep or vacuum dry powder first, then mop. On light marble or unsealed stone, dyes can leave a faint stain, so on those floors make the rangoli on a sheet or MDF mat, or test a small patch first. Our marble floor cleaner guide covers safe cleaning.

Product

Why it is not on the list

CraftVatika 12 Rangoli Colour Tube Kit

The most-rated kit, but at 3.9 stars its review summary mentions colours not coming out of the bottles, very small bottles and coarse powder.

CraftVatika 24 Colour Tube Kit

One owner found 24 bottles meant two of each of 12 colours, and the review summary mentions shards of glass in one pack.

Ascension 20 Colour Bottles + Stencils

Mixed reviews on quality, with owners receiving 19 colours instead of 20 and one pack arriving badly damaged.

Ascension Sand Rangoli Powder (10 packets)

Cheap loose colour, but colours are sent randomly as per availability, and owners are split between bright and dull.

The verdict

Start with the Ascension kit if you are new to rangoli or making it with children. If you draw free-hand, buy hamy's glitter colours and a bag of hamy Marble White for the outline. Add stencils for neat motifs, and SOLOBOLO mats if your floor fights you.

Then finish the doorway with light: a few flameless diyas around the edge and a warm string along the railing.

How we researched this guide

These picks come from desk research, not hands-on testing. We compare published specifications against others in the same price band, read through verified buyer reviews for problems that repeat rather than one-off complaints, and check the current Amazon.in price to judge value. Products are scored on the same three factors every time — specifications (40%), buyer sentiment (40%) and value for money (20%).

We have not physically tested these products, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. Where a claim about safety, certification, battery behaviour or warranty appears in this guide, it comes from the manufacturer’s own documentation or the retailer’s listing — we do not verify manufacturer claims independently.
