> Elbow Grease, Cif, Mr Muscle or Happi Planet? Kitchen sprays that cut tadka grease on stoves, chimneys and tiles and why caustic soda can ruin a chimney filter.

_Independent guide. Rankings are not paid for; purchases via links may earn a commission._

## Top picks at a glance

- Best for heavy grease: Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser Spray (1 litre) — A British solvent-free degreaser that owners call one of the best; 4.6 stars from 4,900+.
- Best everyday spray: Cif Power & Shine Kitchen Cleaner Spray (700 ml) — Spray, wait a few seconds, wipe; orange-oil formula safe for food areas, per the listing.
- Best for OTG, oven and chimney hood: Cif Perfect Finish Oven & Grill Cleaner (435 ml) — A thicker specialist for burnt-on grease you leave to work for up to 30 minutes; 4.3 stars.
- Best plant-based cleaner: Happi Planet Foaming Kitchen Cleaner Spray (500 ml) — A foaming baking-soda and coconut-surfactant spray; bought more than 20,000 times a month.
- Best for exhaust fans and old burn marks: Blueoxy Kitchen Cleaner Degreaser (500 ml) — A heavy-duty citrus-terpene degreaser; owners report removing two-year-old oil burn marks.
- Best for masala and haldi stains: Mr Muscle Kitchen Cleaner (450 ml) — A familiar spray that the listing says handles grease plus haldi, curry, tea and ketchup stains.

Tadka is wonderful for dal and terrible for kitchens. Every time mustard seeds crackle in hot oil, a fine mist of oil settles on the stove, the tiles behind it, the chimney hood and the exhaust fan. Wiped the same day, it comes off with soap. Left for a month, it oxidises into a sticky, amber layer that ordinary dishwash liquid barely touches. That is the job a kitchen degreaser is for.

For this guide we went through about 160 kitchen cleaner and degreaser listings on Amazon.in, kept products in stock on 25 September 2026 with enough ratings to judge, and read the review summaries and owner reviews for how each one handles old grease, how harsh it is on skin, and how it smells.

We split the picks by job, because the spray you use to wipe the stove every evening is not the one you want for a chimney hood that has not been cleaned since Diwali last year.

The honest take

No spray will make ten months of chimney grease disappear with one wipe. The routine that works is a mild spray every day, so grease never sets, and a strong degreaser with 10 to 15 minutes of dwell time once a month. If you buy only one bottle, make it Elbow Grease; if you want something gentle to use daily near food, choose Happi Planet or Cif.

## How to choose

### Daily cleaner or heavy-duty degreaser

Daily sprays such as Cif Power & Shine, Mr Muscle and Happi Planet are mild enough to use near food and work on fresh grease. Heavy-duty degreasers such as Elbow Grease and Blueoxy break down old, oxidised grease but are harsher on skin and need rinsing. Most kitchens benefit from one of each.

### Dwell time does most of the work

Spray, then wait. Most listings suggest a few seconds to a minute for light grease; Cif's oven cleaner allows up to 30 minutes for baked-on grime. Scrubbing immediately wastes the product and your effort.

### Check the surface

Laminate, glazed tiles, glass and stainless steel handle most degreasers. Painted walls, wooden cabinets, natural stone and Italian marble can be marked; test on a hidden spot first. Happi Planet's limescale remover listing, for example, warns against Italian marble. On stainless steel, wipe along the grain.

### Protect your skin and lungs

Several owners of the stronger sprays mention burning skin or a smell that made them reach for a mask. Wear rubber gloves, open a window or run the chimney on its lowest setting, and never spray near a lit burner.

### Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser Spray (1 litre)

The verdict

The strongest all-round degreaser here, and the one that also rescues oil-stained clothes.

Elbow Grease is a UK cleaning brand, and this degreaser has a cult following among people who have tried everything else. The listing describes a solvent-free formula for grease across kitchen surfaces, bathrooms, fabrics, carpets and even car engines, with a lemon scent. The 1 litre bottle has a 4.6-star average from more than 4,900 ratings.

Amazon's review summary calls it one of the best degreasers, effectively removing grease and dirt, with one customer using it on hobs, oven doors, plastics and even fabric stains. Owners of the 500 ml bottle describe it working like a charm on gas stoves and on baked-on grease, and one calls it magic in an Indian kitchen.

It is expensive compared with Indian brands, and one owner found it less effective than hoped on hard oil stains inside a chimney. Opinions on the scent are split. The 1 litre bottle works out cheaper per millilitre than the 500 ml one.

| Type | All-purpose degreaser spray |
| --- | --- |
| Formula (listing) | Solvent-free, lemon scent |
| Surfaces (listing) | Kitchen, bathroom, fabrics, carpets, vehicles |

- Large 1 litre bottle

#### Cons

### Cif Power & Shine Kitchen Cleaner Spray (700 ml)

The verdict

The easy daily spray for stove, tiles, taps and chimney hood.

Cif's kitchen spray is designed for a quick daily clean: spray, leave for a few seconds, wipe. The listing says it contains orange and tangerine oils that cut through grease, gives a streak-free finish on chimneys, gas stoves, hobs, sinks, taps and tiles, and is safe for food preparation areas. It has a 4.1-star average from more than 5,400 ratings and more than 3,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective at removing grease and stains, leaving surfaces sparkling, and particularly easy to use for chimney cleaning. One owner who rarely writes reviews says it removed the toughest kitchen grease without heavy scrubbing and praises the generous nozzle.

Cleaning power gets mixed feedback: one owner had to apply it two or three times on oil stains and found it best on glass and glossy surfaces. Some buyers mention strong chemical smells, and a few question authenticity. Buy it for daily upkeep rather than a once-a-year deep clean.

| Type | Kitchen cleaner spray |
| --- | --- |
| Key ingredients (listing) | Orange and tangerine oils |
| Food areas | Safe, per the listing |
| Pack size | 700 ml |
| Rating | 4.1 stars (5,400+) |

#### Pros

- Fast spray-and-wipe routine
- Large 700 ml bottle
- Streak-free on glossy surfaces

#### Cons

- Needs repeat sprays on old grease
- Some report strong smell and authenticity doubts

### Cif Perfect Finish Oven & Grill Cleaner (435 ml)

The verdict

The one for OTGs, microwaves, grills and the underside of a chimney hood.

Cif's Oven & Grill Cleaner is a specialist for burnt-on grease. The listing says to apply it to cold surfaces, leave it for up to 30 minutes depending on how tough the grease is, then rinse, and that it works on ceramic and stainless steel ovens, grills, chimneys, gas stoves and hobs. It has a 4.3-star average from more than 4,500 ratings.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective at removing tough stains and grease, with one noting it works well on chimney hoods and taking about ten minutes to clear old grease. One owner cleaned an OTG and a convection oven in minutes and noticed the smell did not linger; another says a year of hard grime came off in 30 minutes without scratches.

Some owners mention a strong odour. Always use it on a cold, switched-off appliance, keep the room ventilated, and rinse off completely before cooking again.

| Type | Oven and grill cleaner spray |
| --- | --- |
| Use (listing) | Cold surfaces; leave up to 30 minutes; rinse |
| Surfaces (listing) | Ovens, grills, chimneys, stoves, hobs |

- Owners clean OTGs and hoods in minutes

Best for: OTGs, microwave ovens, grills and chimney hoods.

Skip it if: Everyday wiping; it is overkill.

### Happi Planet Foaming Kitchen Cleaner Spray (500 ml)

The verdict

The pick if you want a non-toxic spray for daily use near food.

Happi Planet's kitchen cleaner sprays out as foam, which clings to vertical tiles and cabinet fronts instead of running off. The listing says it is made from baking soda and plant-based surfactants derived from coconuts, gives off no toxic fumes, and is safe for food preparation areas. It is by far the best-selling kitchen cleaner here, with more than 20,000 bought in the past month and a 4.0-star average from more than 13,700 ratings.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective at removing grease and stains within minutes, making kitchen cleaning quick, and appreciate the absence of harsh chemical fumes. Owners describe using it on stoves, countertops and cabinets with minimal scrubbing.

The summary also reports buyers who say it does not work as advertised, and opinions differ on whether the foaming works as promised. It is best for regular cleaning; heavy, old build-up needs something stronger.

| Type | Foaming kitchen cleaner |
| --- | --- |
| Ingredients (listing) | Baking soda, coconut-derived surfactants |
| Fumes | None toxic, per the listing |
| Pack size | 500 ml |
| Rating | 4.0 stars (13,700+) |

### Blueoxy Kitchen Cleaner Degreaser (500 ml)

The verdict

A tough, budget heavy-duty spray, as long as you wear gloves.

Blueoxy's degreaser is sold for heavy-duty household and commercial use. The listing describes an extra-strength, water-based formula with citrus terpenes and surfactants, fast-acting on tough oils and grease on equipment, appliances and walls, and suitable for glass stove tops. It has a 4.1-star average from more than 4,700 ratings.

Amazon's review summary says customers call it the best in the market, praising its effectiveness on tough grease, and notes one customer removing two-year-old oil burn marks. One owner says it made cleaning exhaust fan grease much quicker; another has reordered it five times.

The summary reports that several customers find it harsh on skin, and one owner says the chemical smell was bothering enough to wear a mask. Use gloves, open a window, and do not use it for a quick wipe near food.

| Type | Heavy-duty degreaser spray |
| --- | --- |
| Formula (listing) | Water-based with citrus terpenes |
| Surfaces (listing) | Appliances, walls, glass stove tops |
| Pack size | 500 ml |

- Works on exhaust fans and hoods
- Good value for a heavy-duty spray

#### Cons

- Harsh on skin; gloves needed
- Strong chemical smell

Best for: Exhaust fans, chimney hoods and old burn marks on stoves.

Skip it if: Daily cleaning near food.

### Mr Muscle Kitchen Cleaner (450 ml)

The verdict

A solid, inexpensive daily spray for the everyday mess of an Indian kitchen.

Mr Muscle's kitchen cleaner is aimed squarely at Indian kitchens: the listing says it cleans grease and oil as well as haldi, curry, masala, tea, coffee, rice water and ketchup stains on stoves, chimneys, exhausts, countertops, tiles and microwaves, and kills 99% of germs. It has a 4.3-star average from more than 4,000 ratings and more than 6,000 bought in the past month.

Amazon's review summary says customers find it effective at removing grease and grime, with one noting it works well on chimneys, and appreciate its quality and fresh scent. One owner says it removes all the stove stains and adds shine.

It is a daily cleaner rather than a heavy-duty degreaser. One owner says it does not remove heavy stains, and another found it closer to a glass-and-surface cleaner than a grease cutter.

| Type | Kitchen cleaner spray |
| --- | --- |
| Stains (listing) | Grease, haldi, curry, masala, tea, coffee, ketchup |
| Germs (brand claim) | Kills 99% |
| Pack size | 450 ml |

#### Pros

- Handles everyday Indian food stains
- Inexpensive and widely available
- Fresh lemon scent

#### Cons

- Some find it too mild

## How to clean a kitchen chimney filter

1. Switch off the chimney at the plug and let it cool.
2. Remove the filter. Mesh filters are usually aluminium; baffle filters are aluminium or stainless steel. Check your manual.
3. Soak the filter in a tub of hot water with a generous squirt of degreaser or dishwash liquid and two spoons of baking soda for 30 to 60 minutes.
4. Scrub gently with a soft brush along the mesh or baffles. Avoid steel wool on mesh filters.
5. Rinse with hot water, shake off, and let it dry completely before refitting.
6. Spray the inside of the hood with a degreaser, wait, and wipe with a damp cloth.

If you fry or temper food daily, clean mesh filters every two to three weeks. Baffle filters hold more grease before airflow suffers, but still need regular cleaning; your chimney's manual gives the maker's interval.

## Mistakes to avoid

### Using caustic soda on aluminium filters

Online hacks often suggest soaking chimney filters in caustic soda. Caustic soda cuts grease brilliantly but it also attacks aluminium, eating away mesh filters and leaving them dull, grey and weakened. Use it only on stainless-steel filters, with gloves and eye protection, and never on aluminium.

### Spraying hot surfaces

Degreasers evaporate on a hot stove, give off stronger fumes and leave streaks. Clean after the stove has cooled.

### Leaving degreaser residue near food

Heavy-duty sprays should be wiped off with a clean damp cloth afterwards, especially on counters where you roll rotis or chop vegetables.

### Scrubbing brass burners with a steel scrubber

Brass burner caps discolour with harsh scrubbing. Soak them in hot soapy water, and restore the shine with a proper brass cleaner; see our brass and copper cleaner guide.

## Popular kitchen cleaners we left out, and why

These rank highly in Amazon.in results for kitchen degreasers. Each was left out for a specific reason from its listing or review summary on 25 September 2026.

| Cleaner | Why it is not on the list |
| --- | --- |
| Vooki Heavy Duty Kitchen Cleaning Spray | Popular, but its review summary is mixed on stain removal and skin irritation, and says customers consider it a waste of money. |
| Avance Oily Stain Remover | Its review summary reports skin irritation and burning, a strong odour and harmful chemicals that require gloves. |
| urban Wipe Kitchen Cleaner Spray | Mild and well liked, but several customers report broken sprayer parts. |
| Kleenest Kitchen Cleaner & Degreaser | Promising reviews, but a much smaller review base than our picks when we checked. |
| Mr Muscle Kitchen Cleaner 875 ml combo | The same product as our pick in a bigger pack; one owner feels cheaper cleaners work just as well at its price. |

How we picked: We read about 160 Amazon.in listings for kitchen cleaners, degreasers and chimney cleaners, kept those in stock on 25 September 2026 with enough ratings to judge, and read each one's review summary and recent owner reviews for grease removal, skin irritation and smell. We did not test these cleaners ourselves; the picks reflect listing details and what verified buyers report.

## Frequently Asked Questions

## The verdict

Elbow Grease is the degreaser to buy if you have one big cleaning job: it has the highest rating here and owners trust it on everything from hobs to fabric. Keep Cif Power & Shine or Mr Muscle by the stove for daily wiping, so grease never gets the chance to set.

Add Cif's Oven & Grill Cleaner for OTGs and chimney hoods, Blueoxy for filthy exhaust fans, and Happi Planet if you prefer a plant-based spray near food. And keep caustic soda away from aluminium chimney filters.
