The short answer

Glass is the one surface where everyone can see how well you cleaned. Wipe a window in the afternoon sun with too much spray and a cloth that's seen better days, and you get rainbow streaks. Wipe the bathroom mirror with a regular glass cleaner and the white hard-water spots stay exactly where they were. Usually the bottle isn't the problem. It's the wrong kind of cleaner for the mark.

There are really two jobs here. Dust, fingerprints and kitchen grease come off with an ordinary glass cleaner and a decent cloth. The chalky white spots on shower glass, bathroom mirrors and windows near a tap are mineral deposits, and those need a mild acid. This guide covers both, plus the two cheap tools that matter more than whatever liquid you pick.

The honest take

Colin works, and it's popular for a reason. But if your windows streak, the fix is almost always technique, not a different bottle: less spray, a clean microfibre cloth, a squeegee for big panes, and no cleaning in direct sun.

If you see white spots that come back the moment the glass dries, no glass cleaner will shift them. That's limescale, and it needs something acidic, like Happi Planet's foam or diluted vinegar. Keep both away from marble, granite counters and natural stone.

Glass cleaner or limescale remover: which do you need?

What you see

What it is

What removes it

Fingerprints, smudges, dusty film

Oils and dust

Ordinary glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth

Sticky yellow film near the stove

Cooking grease

Glass cleaner, two passes; a kitchen degreaser for heavy build-up

White dots or a chalky haze that come back when dry

Hard water minerals (limescale)

An acidic limescale remover or diluted white vinegar

Cloudy patch that does not change when wet

Etched or damaged glass

Nothing at home; it is permanent

Here's a quick way to tell: wet the mark with plain water. If it vanishes while wet and comes back once dry, it's a mineral deposit. If it looks the same either way, it's etching, or something on the other side of the glass.

Myth vs fact

Myth: Newspaper gives the best streak-free shine.
Fact: It used to, back when newsprint ink was different. Now it often leaves grey smudges on the window frame, and a dry microfibre cloth does a better job.

Myth: More spray means cleaner glass.
Fact: Too much cleaner is the main reason glass streaks. Two or three sprays per pane is plenty.

Myth: Scrub harder and a glass cleaner will lift hard water spots.
Fact: Most glass cleaners aren't acidic, so they can't dissolve mineral deposits. Scrubbing harder just risks scratching the glass.

Colin Glass and Surface Cleaner (500 ml spray)

Buy it if: you want one spray for windows, mirrors, glass tables and the fridge door.

Skip it if: your problem is white hard-water spots. Colin won't dissolve them.

Colin is the default glass cleaner in a lot of Indian homes, and it outsells everything else in the category on Amazon.in by a wide margin. The listing credits "shine boosters" for the extra gloss and names glass, mirrors, tabletops, the fridge, the oven door, kitchen cabinets and car windows as fair game.

Owners mostly agree it does what it says: fingerprints and spots come off and the glass looks properly clear. The complaints are almost all about the bottle, not the liquid. A fair number say the spray trigger was missing or gave up early, and some bottles arrived damaged.

Two warnings come up again and again in reviews: don't use it on vinyl, and don't spray it straight onto a TV or laptop screen. Spray the cloth instead. Once you have one bottle with a working trigger, refilling it from the Colin 1 litre pouch works out cheaper.

What owners keep saying

  • Removes fingerprints and spots and leaves a bright shine
  • Spray triggers sometimes fail or arrive missing
  • Not for vinyl; spray the cloth, not screens

Why it made the cut

  • Huge, consistent review base
  • Works on most shiny household surfaces
  • Cheap refill pouches

Watch out for

  • Trigger quality is inconsistent
  • Does nothing for hard water spots

4.2★ from 5,500+ ratings on Amazon.in · 5,000+ bought in the past month

Buy it if: you clean a lot of glass and want the lowest cost per wipe.

Skip it if: you're fussy about smell. The fragrance splits owners.

Presto! is Amazon's own household brand, and this is two 1 litre refill pouches with no spray bottle. You pour it into one you already have. The listing says it handles glass, mirrors, TV and microwave fronts, glazed tiles and granite, and leaves a streak-free finish.

Buyers mostly talk about value. It cleans stains well, it's easy to use, and one reviewer calls it the most economical option they've found. Smell is where opinions split. Some like it, and one buyer who expected something like Colin says it smelled like a tobacco shop when they opened it.

A tip that shows up in several reviews: mix it roughly half and half with water for mirrors and desks. That's plenty for a weekly wipe, and two litres go a long way. Count the pouches when the box arrives, because one repeat buyer got the wrong quantity.

What owners keep saying

  • Cleans glass, mirrors and tiles well for the money
  • Many dilute it 50:50 for light cleaning
  • Smell is the main complaint

Why it made the cut

  • Lowest cost per litre here
  • Works on glass, tiles and appliances
  • Two litres lasts months

Watch out for

  • Fragrance divides opinion
  • Needs your own spray bottle

Happi Planet Tap Cleaner & Limescale Remover (500 ml)

Happi Planet limescale remover foam on a chrome kitchen tap

3.9★ from 22,900+ ratings on Amazon.in · 20,000+ bought in the past month

Buy it if: your shower glass, bathroom mirror or windows have white spots that glass cleaner can't shift.

Skip it if: there's marble or natural stone right next to the glass. Acid will etch it.

This isn't a glass cleaner, and that's the point. According to the listing, it's made from organic acids derived from sugars plus plant-based surfactants, and it comes out as a foam, so it sits on vertical glass instead of running straight down. Mirrors, showers, tiles, taps, sinks and basins are all on the label, along with a clear note not to use it on Italian marble. Spray, wait about a minute, scrub, rinse and wipe dry.

It's the top seller in its category on Amazon.in, but the 3.9 rating tells you reviews are mixed. Plenty of people say it left their taps, tiles and mirrors sparkling and like the smell. Others say it did nothing at all.

Reading through the reviews, the difference seems to be how old the deposits are. Light spots come off in one go. Thick, years-old scale needs two or three rounds, as one owner put it. Someone else had the nozzle stop working and ended up pouring it out instead. If the toilet has the same hard-water problem, our toilet cleaners for hard water guide has stronger options.

What owners keep saying

  • Clears light limescale on taps, tiles and mirrors quickly
  • Old, thick deposits need 2 to 3 applications
  • Pleasant smell; occasional faulty nozzles

Why it made the cut

  • Dissolves mineral spots ordinary cleaners cannot
  • Foam clings to vertical glass
  • Clear do-not-use warning for marble

Watch out for

  • Mixed results on very old scale
  • Not for marble or natural stone

Scotch-Brite Small Wiper (squeegee)

Scotch-Brite kitchen wiper clearing water off a granite counter

4.4★ from 33,000+ ratings on Amazon.in · 5,000+ bought in the past month

Buy it if: you clean large windows, sliding doors or a glass shower partition.

Skip it if: you only ever clean small mirrors. A cloth is enough.

Watch a professional window cleaner and you'll notice they never wipe glass dry. They pull the water off with a squeegee in one stroke, then dab the edges, and that's why their windows don't streak. Scotch-Brite's small wiper has a rubbery TPE blade and a short handle, and it's sold for kitchen counters, bathrooms, dining tables and car windows.

Buyers like that it's sturdy and light, and one says a single pass leaves the kitchen platform completely dry with no marks. The two gripes are price and size. Several people found it smaller than they expected for a big bathroom.

One owner used theirs every day for two years without it breaking, and only replaced it when mould showed up on the old one, so rinse it and let it dry after use. For the cloth side of the job, a pack of microfibre cloths like SOFTSPUN's 10-pack is all you need: one damp for cleaning, one dry for buffing.

What owners keep saying

  • One swipe leaves a surface dry and mark-free
  • Sturdy; lasts years
  • Small for large bathrooms

Why it made the cut

  • Cheap fix for streaky windows
  • Also clears water from counters and shower floors
  • Very large review base

Watch out for

  • Small blade for big panes
  • Store dry to avoid mould

How to clean windows and mirrors without streaks

  1. Pick a cloudy hour or the shaded side. In direct sun the cleaner dries before you can wipe it, and that's where streaks come from.
  2. Dust first. Brush the frame and wipe loose dust off the glass with a dry cloth. Grit trapped under a wet cloth scratches.
  3. Go easy on the spray. Two or three sprays per pane. For mirrors and anything near electronics, spray the cloth instead.
  4. Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth, then squeegee the glass dry from top to bottom, wiping the blade after each stroke.
  5. Buff the edges and corners with a dry microfibre cloth, and you're done.

How to remove hard water stains from glass

  1. Protect what's around the glass. Cover or avoid marble, granite and natural stone sills and counters, because acid etches them.
  2. Apply something acidic. A limescale remover, or white vinegar mixed half and half with water in a spray bottle.
  3. Let it sit. About a minute for a commercial foam, five to ten minutes for vinegar. Don't let it dry on the glass.
  4. Scrub with a soft non-scratch pad, never steel wool, then rinse with plain water.
  5. Squeegee and dry straight away. Spots form when hard water evaporates on the glass, so drying the shower screen after every use stops them coming back.

If your bathroom floor is marble, keep acids well away from it. Our marble floor cleaner guide explains why and what to use instead.

Product

Why it is not on the list

Rain-X Shower Door Cleaner

Rated 4.2 overall, but most of the recent Indian reviews we read were one-star reports that it didn't shift hard water stains, and it costs far more than local options.

Bontip Magnetic Double-Sided Glass Cleaner

Shows 4.6 stars from 10,000+ ratings, but its review summary talks about spray bottles, not a magnetic window cleaner. Those ratings look like they belong to a different product.

"Handheld Silicone Glass Wiper"

A 4.8-star squeegee listing whose description is about microfibre gloves, with reviews that include overseas buyers. Too muddled to trust.

JOFF Tap & Shower Cleaner

Well rated at 4.1 stars, but it's sold for taps, showerheads and chrome rather than glass, and owners mention a strong, irritating smell.

Vooki Glass & Smooth Surface Cleaner

A decent eco-friendly option at 4.2 stars, but the only listing we found was a pack of twenty 500 ml bottles. That's far more than a home needs.

How we picked: We searched Amazon.in for glass cleaners, window cleaning tools and hard water stain removers, went through about 130 listings, and shortlisted products with a large base of Indian ratings. For each one we read the listing, the review summary and recent owner reviews, and confirmed it was in stock with Add to Cart available on 2 October 2026. We didn't test these products ourselves; the picks reflect listing details and what verified buyers report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best glass cleaner liquid in India?
For everyday glass, Colin Glass and Surface Cleaner. It's the most popular option on Amazon.in and one of the best rated. For hard water spots, which no glass cleaner can remove, use an acidic limescale remover such as Happi Planet's.
How do I remove hard water stains from glass at home?
Spray diluted white vinegar or a limescale remover, leave it a few minutes without letting it dry, scrub gently with a non-scratch pad, rinse, and dry the glass straight away. Keep acids away from marble and granite.
Why does my glass cleaner leave streaks?
Usually it's too much product, a dirty or linty cloth, or cleaning in direct sun so the liquid dries too fast. Use less spray, a clean microfibre cloth and a squeegee, and buff the edges dry.
Can I use Colin on a TV or laptop screen?
Owners advise against spraying it on screens. Most screen makers recommend a soft, dry microfibre cloth, or one lightly dampened with water, with the device switched off.
Is vinegar safe for cleaning glass?
Diluted white vinegar is fine on glass and works well on hard water spots. Don't let it drip onto marble, granite or natural stone, and avoid it on tinted window film unless the film maker says it's OK.
How do I stop water spots on shower glass?
Squeegee the glass after every shower. Water spots are minerals left behind when hard water evaporates, so getting the water off before it dries prevents them.

The verdict

For everyday windows and mirrors, Colin is still the safe choice; buy the refill pouch to keep costs down. If you have a lot of glass and a tight budget, Presto! does the same job for less. For the white spots ordinary cleaners can't touch, use Happi Planet's limescale remover, carefully and away from stone. And whatever liquid you choose, get a squeegee. It's the cheapest way to make your glass look better.

Doing the whole house before Diwali? Clean the glass after the dusty jobs like ceiling fans, so you only have to do it once.

How we researched this guide

These picks come from desk research, not hands-on testing. We compare published specifications against others in the same price band, read through verified buyer reviews for problems that repeat rather than one-off complaints, and check the current Amazon.in price to judge value. Products are scored on the same three factors every time — specifications (40%), buyer sentiment (40%) and value for money (20%).

We have not physically tested these products, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. Where a claim about safety, certification, battery behaviour or warranty appears in this guide, it comes from the manufacturer’s own documentation or the retailer’s listing — we do not verify manufacturer claims independently.
